As has become quite evident through this series, the River Townhouse project required highly involved design work and large-scale renovations. We did not, however, let that distract us from our appreciation for the details. This powder bathroom, while modest in square footage, is grand in its detailed selections. Every inch of this space lovingly and attentively celebrates the inspirational objet d’art Japanese panels through a marriage of antique as well as luxurious custom-designed pieces.  

Faucet

This particular faucet is a personal favorite of Carey’s due to its perfect compositional elements: the feel of the handles, the height of the faucet, and the brushed gold finish. A challenge in this tighter space was identifying a mirror and faucet combination that not only matched in color finish but in gold tone. This fixture is both functional and beautiful with just enough detailing to contribute to and complement the antique aspects of the rest of the space.

Countertop

Countertop selection is an important phase of every design project that requires one. Every slab is unique with its own linear veining and movement which therefore involves a purposeful and careful selection process. This Belvedere granite contained all the rich blacks and marbling to suit this space. A sophisticated piece, this countertop contains a touch of drama in the coloring and a balance from the veining and clusters.

Vanity

The vanity cabinet was custom designed and built for this bathroom with the intention of accomplishing two goals: maximize the available space, and to bring our vision to life. The sink apron allows for the continuation of our beautiful countertop down to seamlessly meet the vanity. The door pulls were carefully selected to align with the antique elements of the bathroom and to provide a special detail that is both unique and cohesive. The final custom element of the cabinetry is the black stained leg that adds depth as well as highlights the wood texture of the cabinetry; had it not been painted black, the detailing in the leg would have been lost.

Lighting

And last but not least, this light fixture contains both gold and black elements to merge the primary colors of the space. This antique brass finish pendent contains three candelabras thereby creating the desired ambience for the room. This piece completes the golden brass trilogy for the space and is the perfect finishing touch that is nothing short of breathtaking.

This bathroom renovation transformed an often-neglected space into a true masterpiece of both design practice and material application. But ultimately the most rewarding and important achievement was our client’s satisfaction with the space where he joked, “it is too bad a space as beautiful as this one needs to have a door,” but alas powder baths, no matter how spectacular, do require a door.
